Birthdays

As a child, your birthday is the best day of your life. There are presents, cake, a party, all of your friends. It’s a day of happiness and excitement to grow one year older.

Yet as these birthdays go by, instead of counting down the day until it finally arrives, many adults feel the dread. The dread of getting more wrinkles, and creaky bones, more worries of what am I doing with my life, and more worries of losing the ones we hold dear.

It’s like there is this unwritten plateau of birthdays, where from birth until 21 it is smooth sailing. There are a plethora of milestones that kids are itching to reach. But for everyone there is that one birthday where that excitement starts to dwindle. The fanfare and celebrations are tucked away to dismiss any indication of actually turning older.

I can understand why many of us want to deny the fact that ever year, no matter how hard we try, we will get older. It’s scary and unpredictable. I feel that is exactly why we must celebrate. We should all be cherishing in the moment that we have another birthday. We have the opportunity to live longer, so we need to also live fuller.

And full of scrumptious food!

Because what is living, if not for indulging during birthday month (ya, you heard me right a whole month!) Whether you always go out for a nice meal, or stay in for a home cooked dinner, don’t be afraid to be excited. Bring back that eager anticipation. Count down the days again. Have a party, play games. Revel in it.
